Yesterday marked the 23rd annual Summer Jam concert from Hot 97, and another epic night for the record books! I was frazzled for a majority of the show because I signed up to work, and was assigned to handle all things Fetty Wap and Ty Dolla $ign…which sounded fun in theory, but DAMN it was a lot of work! Needless to say, I missed about 90% of things that happened – and that includes all that drama outside. My mother actually was texting me in a panic making sure I was okay, and I had to ask her what she was talking about because we were calmly sitting around sharing “deez nuts” jokes backstage at the time. LOL! It’s a shame a few bad apples attempted to spoil the whole bunch, but they ultimately didn’t – as the show went on inside without incident, and for the tens of thousands that did get in, it was an amazing time!
SO much went on behind-the-scenes and on the stage, so I’ll start from the beginning at the Festival Stage.
Teyana Taylor paid tribute to the fly ladies of the 90s with her set (finger waves and all,) B.o.B. performed his hits and jumped into the crowd, DeJ Loaf performed her hits and got one of the biggest reactions, Fetty Wap got THE biggest reaction for sure (and it was his 24th birthday, by the way), Joey Bada$$ kept it real NY, Chedda Da Connect surprised the crowd and performed “Flick Of Da Wrist”…and then there’s Travi$ Scott. We’ll get to him in a second, though.
Travi$ closed out the Festival Stage, and he did not come without controversy! On a positive note, he tore that stage DOWN, he premiered his new banger “3500” with Future and 2 Chainz, and he brought out 2 Milly for a surprise performance of “Milly Rock.” On a note-so-positive note, he heckled the f*ck out of a Hot 97 employee who was filming on stage, kicked him off, and later apologized on Twitter. Not cool!

The photog’s reaction today:
Now on to the main stage! First up was Omarion, followed by Ty Dolla $ign – who brought out special guests Wiz Khalifa and DeJ Loaf. The way the crowd reacted when Wiz put on “We Dem Boyz” was NUTS! Spotted backstage with O was his girlfriend and Love & Hip-Hop co-star, Apryl Jones. Spotted backstage with Ty was me. LOL!
Next up was Trey Songz, who of course had the ladies going nuts with his set, and he then ushered in his Between The Sheets homie Chris Brown for his set. Though Trigga rocked solo, Breezy not only brought out G-Unit (who actually almost didn’t get in, according to 50,) but he then brought out French Montana – making for the squashing of 50 and French‘s beef. French paid tribute to Chinx during his performance which was really dope.
Paying tribute to Chinx:
Up next was arguably the best set of the night, because Fabolous had a TON of tricks up his sleeves! He came out and with “She Wildin” and “Ball Drop,” bringing both Breezy and French back out to help him do so. Then getting into his Young OG status, he then paid homage and reunited NYC as he brought out a list of guests: from Black Rob, to Busta Rhymes and Spliff Star, Remy Ma and Fat Joe (yes – together!), The LOX, Redman and Method Man, Ma$e, Raekwon, Lil Kim and Mobb Deep!
Kendrick Lamar kept it in the family and brought out Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q and SZA, then had one more surprise with Welven Da Great…aka the “Deez Nuts” guy and K.dot‘s inspiration behind his character in Taylor Swift‘s “Bad Blood” video. He’s livin!
Big Sean came next, and though I heard rumblings backstage of a surprise from both Kanye West and Jay Z, he rocked out solo – though killing his set nonetheless. Meek soon followed, and brought out special guests Nicki Minaj (who told him for the first time that she loved him right there in front of thousands) and Future, and he also announced that his sophomore album Dreams Worth More Than Money will finally be arriving this month!
The show then closed with mini-sets from Troy Ave and Jersey‘s own superstar, Fetty Wap! SQUAD!
I don’t want to give too much light to the negative fights and arrests that happened OUTSIDE, but I will share Ebro‘s response:
“Well if people try to jump the gate and rush police. Yes I’m shutting it down, We don’t know if those people have weapons or their intentions. We are not jeapordizing the whole event for a few dummies. The gates open at 2P at the Festival and 530P at the Stadium….Its unfortunate that a few idiots come to try and test this event we have had success with for 23yrs… My apologies to anyone left out, but I WILL NEVER allow this event to be ruined by some lazy idiots that didn’t wanna spend $40 on some tickets. FOH loser….Get here on time BTW”
Word! Also – Childish Gambino was a no-show. Not sure what happened there. And I spotted E-40 backstage for a while. He never came out with anyone, though. Why wouldn’t Sean have brought him? Odd.
