Being a music blogger for over a year now, I’ve done some pretty cool things in the industry so far. I’ve seen my favorite rappers – signed and unsigned – perform, and I’ve gotten to pick the brains of my favorite celebrities by doing interviews, and conference calls. I don’t take any moment for granted, so I was hella pumped when the head honcho of the lovely site, Marisa Mendez, asked me to be with her for a day BACKSTAGE at the New Jersey stop of Wiz Khalifa‘s Under The Influence of Music Tour this past Sunday!
In my lifetime, I’ve been to plenty of concerts, but this was my first time being allowed to hang with the performers backstage in an ultra-chill setting, so forgive me if I seem like a newbie. I was glad parking at the PNC Arts Center was free, and I’m glad it was because parking was also easy and comfortable, too. Once I got my pass and to the gate, I was in agony over missing HBK perform, and hearing Sage (the Gemini, of course. See pics on ‘da gram.) and IAMSU! set the crowd on fire. For what it’s worth, the set sounded LIT from the side of the stage…away from all the action.
More importantly, I learned that Marisa has more juice than Bishop when she finally came and rescued me, and brought me backstage, along with our lovely site designer, Emmelie! After some time chatting it up with new faces, the first famous new face that I saw was Sage the Gemini! I’d like to say that he’s very cool and down to earth, and thanks for the pics (even though security bugged! Didn’t wanna get kicked out.) Mack Wilds also walked right past me, and if you know me, you know I’ve been a fan since The Wire. I wanted to speak, but I was star-struck and now I’m just mad at myself. I owed it to myself to get a picture with the Kush God, JetLife’s Smoke DZA! Saving the day once again, Marisa hooked up a picture of me and one of my biggest inspirations as a DJ, sir DJ Drama himself! That’s definitely one thing I will never forget, although I hope this won’t be my last time meeting him. The whole HBK gang was definitely turnt, and shout out to them for kickin’ it with me on the bus! I feel like everyone could tell I was fresh meat, though, especially when I got a little too excited when SU! played his song “OMG” featuring Young Thug. I had to remember that these people actually made that song, so they wouldn’t be as hype as I would be. HBK Gang‘s music goes so hard in my skating rink, so you can kind of see the reason for my excitement! Sorry if I made anything awkward. The coolest thing that could have happened was being shown new music from SU! himself, that I’ll definitely be sure to spin at the rink next time I work. They probably weren’t really new, but my market in Philadelphia gets all the new music late, especially new Cali music. I definitely made sure to go home and download what I heard the next day. I had the most fun time ever, HOWEVER…I believe my lighter was stolen by Kool John, so dear HBK Gang, if you see a rainbow “BIC” lighter on your bus, just know that it’s mine. Keep it.
Walking backstage, we randomly brushed past Rich Homie Quan in all his golden glory, and it looked like he was about to climb on stage. This was my second time seeing Jeezy perform, and he always puts on an electrifying show! My last time seeing him was in 2011 at Howard University homecoming, and I’m glad I got to see him again and turn up with him when he performed “Seen It All.” His performance made me that much more excited for the album to drop, and shout to to him for the CTE World towel! I got to see the middle of Wiz‘s show towards the end, and he performed songs from Blacc Hollywood, ending with what I believe was “Promises.” Wiz has been one of my favorite performers for years, and to finally get to see him perform was amazing, and something every stoner should see. He’s not just a rapper, he’s an all-around musician, and his tour exudes that.
